Norbord´s South Molton site has worked for a number of years with the Soil Association, the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), and Norbord customers, to achieve realistic good forestry policies.
In 1999 Norbord South Molton became the first UK board manufacturer to obtain FSC certification through the Soil Association, demonstrating that industry and environmental bodies can work together to achieve good and sustainable forestry practice, applying the mutually agreed policies
The FSC trademark is a label on timber and wood products that indicates that the wood comes from a well-managed forest. It gives assurance that the forest of origin has been independently inspected and evaluated to comply with an internationally agreed set of strict environmental, social and economic standards.
FSC accreditation recognises that the woodlands providing the timber not only support sustainable forestry harvesting and replanting programmes but also support the holistic view of woodland use from habitats offered to wildlife and the impact on local people.
The FSC trademark enables companies and consumers to choose timber with the confidence that they are not contributing to the destruction of the world's forests. By buying from certified sources they provide an incentive in the marketplace for good forestry practice.
Norbord´s South Molton site has adopted best environmental practises for many years, first working with the Soil Association in early 1992.
Following those early meetings, the first environmental committee was then formed and by 1993 environmental responsibilities for improvements were accepted throughout the site.
In 2000 the site elected to work within the requirements of ISO14001 in order to demonstrate verification of its environmental procedures and policies. ISO 14001 specifies the requirements for an environmental management system. It applies to those environmental aspects that the organisation has control of, and over which it can be expected to have an influence.
As a result, Norbord South Molton became the first board production plant in the UK to achieve certification for this environmental management system.
In 1990, Norbord implemented a formal quality system to ensure, and have confirmed via external auditing, that Norbord provide first class customer satisfaction through internal system controls. The standard used at the time was BS5750.
This standard has been updated a number of times since then and underwent a major review during 2004. Significant changes were made to give greater emphasis to customer satisfaction and continuous improvement. Norbord South Molton successfully achieved approval to the revised standard BS EN ISO 9001:2004.
WHAT IS BS EN ISO 9001:2004?
This is an accreditation that demonstrates an organisation´s ability to consistently provide product that meets customer and regulatory requirements and aims to enhance customer satisfaction.
WHY DO WE NEED ISO 9001:2004?
The ISO standard demonstrates to customers that Norbord´s South Molton site produces and supplies a consistent quality product in a controlled way.
